“I had a situation last season where I lost a player I like very much in Tiago because he was afraid of not having enough chances to play at Chelsea. This season there is a chance of losing another player I like in Damien Duff,” Mourinho said.
“Why? Because he is afraid of not having as many matches as he wishes. That is the reality. When you have a squad of such high quality and at the same time high numbers, some players feel really difficult to face.
“A player like John Terry or Frank Lampard is not afraid. I can bring 50 central defenders and Terry is not afraid. But generally players, they want to play. People sometimes look at football players as people focussed on money but more than that they love to play football. They can leave a big team like Chelsea and some can even be ready to lose some money in relation to their contracts to play football.”
It is Mourinho’s belief that a small reduction in squad size will allow him to give the vast majority of players the minimum number of games they deserve. It is one of the ways he envisages improving Chelsea still further for the season ahead and years beyond.
“Even to buy young players like Jon Mikel or Kalou I have to be able to tell them they will play. The same thing with Lassana Diarra,” he claimed.
“After he played the European Under 21 championships he had a lot of clubs, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese watching and for me to tell him you don’t go, you will stay, you will play, that is only possible with this kind of squad.
“So we will have top quality and short numbers, so everybody knows they will have a lot of chances. In this manner I can keep high quality, everybody happy in the group and very good young players are not afraid to come to Chelsea.”
A squad size of 20 is the number suggested — with no reduction in versatility.
“Of course two right-backs, of course two left-backs and of course four central defenders, but when I have William Gallas in that group of central defenders I can say I have three right-backs and I have three left backs.
“When I have Essien, he can play defensive midfielder or on the right-side of midfield or on the left side. Kalou is a second striker, Kalou is a left winger, Kalou is a right winger. If we play 4-4-2 he is a striker, if we play 4-3-3 he is a winger.
“So because we have five or six players who are adapted to different positions, it is a 20-player squad with more options than having two players for each position.”
Mourinho talked further about one of his most adaptable charges — World Cup finalist William Gallas.
“Gallas will be at Chelsea next season. At this moment I cannot say if it will be with one year of contract or with five years of contract, but I think when he comes from his holiday and joins us, maybe a couple of days after that we can tell you whether William is staying with one year of contract or five.”

Például, amikor a Community Shield-ért játszunk, addigra a Liverpool már BL meccseket is játszik és egy hónapja fognak edzeni. Amikor a Manchester City-vel játszunk az első fordulóban, hasonló lesz a helyzet. Nagyon erős a keretünk és tudom mindenki hatalmas elszántsággal tér vissza, de a valóság az, hogy a fél csapattal kell játszanunk az USA-ban. Eidur Gudjohnsen has issued a farewell message to the Chelsea fans who supported him for the past six seasons. The Barcelona-bound player took the opportunity to refute recent quotes attributed to him.
Newspaper reports after Gudjohnsen agreed to move to Spain indicated that he was desperate in the near future to both meet and beat the club he was leaving.
“I don’t know if it was a big thing over here [in England] but when I was in Iceland, I saw a few stories that were printed there, saying that my dream was to knock Chelsea out of the Champions League or beat Chelsea in the Champions League Final. It’s nothing like that!” he insisted as he spoke to Chelsea TV.
“Obviously I am a man with ambitions and I would love to win the Champions League with my new club but I never meant to say that I want to rub it in Chelsea’s face.
“I wish the club, the fans and the players all the best in the world and it would be very strange to be on the other side of the match that started two years ago if Chelsea were to play Barcelona.
“I just want to make it clear that I have nothing but respect for Chelsea and if I ever said anything to disrespect anyone then I sincerely regret it.”
Gudjohnsen spoke directly about the supporters who have backed him during his 263 games in Chelsea colours.
“The amount of respect, support and love that I felt is definitely mutual. There were so many mixed emotions when we got the Premiership trophy in May. I knew that it would probably be my last walk on Stamford Bridge wearing a Chelsea shirt and I felt it. I think some of the fans must have realised it as well.
“I have the utmost respect and love for the club and everything around it, especially the fans because they have always stood by me and I have always felt really appreciated.
“I think it would have been very difficult for me to move within England because of the strong connections I have.”
